UK ENIC: Getting Your Foreign Degree Recognised

What UK ENIC is

UK ENIC (the UK European Network of Information Centres, formerly known as NARIC) is the official body that compares foreign qualifications to UK levels. Its 'statement of comparability' tells employers, universities and professional bodies what your degree corresponds to in the UK system.

Who actually needs it

You do not always need UK ENIC. Many employers accept degrees directly, and universities usually assess applications themselves. A statement of comparability is typically requested by:

  • Employers who want an official equivalency for a foreign degree
  • Professional registration bodies during their checks
  • Some universities for postgraduate admissions
  • Certain visa routes where qualification level must be evidenced

Where certified translation comes in

UK ENIC requires certified English translations of any document not issued in English — your diploma and, where requested, your full transcript. The translation must be complete and faithful: course titles, grades and the grading scale exactly as they appear on the original.

Important: the translator must not convert your grades into UK grades. Equivalency is UK ENIC's job; the translation's job is accuracy. A translation that 'helpfully' converts grades can cause the application to be rejected.

Practical tips

  • Scan documents flat, in good light — stamps and signatures must be legible
  • Send the diploma and transcript together; they are usually assessed as a set
  • Keep institution names consistent between diploma and transcript translations
  • Allow time: get translations done before you start the UK ENIC application
